Deftones with Gojira - Mohegan Sun Arena - May 19, 2022

Deftones and Gojira absolutely rocked the Mohegan Sun Arena Thursday night. VOWWS was originally scheduled to be the opening act, but there was a last minute change to the lineup. Gojira kicked things off with their hard hitting song “Born for One Thing” off of the 2021 Fortitude album. They continued their set with heavy tracks and powerful guitar riffs. Currently, one of the most recognizable tracks from Gojira is “Stranded”. Once the band hit the first few notes of this track, the entire audience was head banging in unison. Gojira has a few more tour dates left with the Deftones before they head back to their home oversees in France for the Festival, “Hellfest” taking place in June in Clisson, France.

Deftones are such an iconic band with so many hits to choose from over their illustrious career it was a treat to get a perfect sampling from their various albums. During their 19 song setlist (2 of those were encores) the Deftones were able to play a song from 9 different albums which was pretty incredible to witness. Lead singer Chino Moreno has been the face and voice of this band since the very beginning. Moreno poured his heart into every song from start to finish and the crowd was loving it. Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham & Frank Delgado have also been with the band either since the very beginning or at least since the 90’s. The Deftones bass player departed from the band in 2021, but the touring bass player was a familiar face to rock fans. Bassist Fred Sablan has played, toured or recorded with so many impressive projects. To name a few, he has played for Marilyn Manson, Queen Kwong (alongside guitarist Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit) and most recently formed a hardcore punk band called Heavens Blades (along with Piggy D. of Wednesday 13 & Rob Zombie). Sablan fit in seamlessly on this tour with the Deftones.

The visuals during this show were impressive. Video clips were played in the background that enhanced the musical experience. Deftones have always been an experimental rock group and they kept true to that with the sights and sounds during the entire show. Hits like “Change (In the House of Flies)” played near the end of the set and kept fans engaged until the very end. This show had to be postponed and rescheduled twice due to Covid and I think all of the fans would agree it was well worth the wait.
