Having last performed in Madison in January of 2020 before the Covid pandemic put live music to a halt, Minnesota natives, Trambled by Turtles, made their long-awaited return to The Sylvee this past weekend for two nights of folk music with special guest Langhorne Slim.
Langhorne Slim started both nights off; Quite successfully, at that. If you’re like me and haven’t heard of Langhorne Slim before now, definitely go check him out. Slim’s music blends multiple genres in a remarkably seamless way. You may get a country vibe; other times, you might hear blues. Before you know, you’ll be hearing folk-rock. In addition to blending different genres with catchy melodies, Longhorne Slim’s songs are genuine and written from the heart. His songs speak to many about issues that we all as humans face at some point or another. Overall, Langhorne Slim’s performance on both nights was top-notch, and he did an excellent job preparing the crowd to get Trampled.
Night One
Being able to witness Trampled by Turtles perform is a treat in itself, but being able to catch Trampled by Turtles perform two nights in a row is nothing but a dream come true. Night one would entail playing their fifth studio album, Palomino, in full, followed by night two featuring Stars and Satellites in full, which is also nearing its 10th anniversary.
Like Longhorne Slim, Trampled by Turtles is influenced by many musical genres, which you can hear in many of their songs.
Palomino is an upbeat, fast-paced album, with tracks like “Wait So Long” and “It’s a War”, it’s no wonder that Trampled by Turtles is often referred to as the 'Dragonforce of bluegrass'. The speed and technical ability that everyone displays can be appreciated by many. Trampled by Turtles 2012 release, Stars and Satellites takes a slower and more collected approach to their sound while still providing fans with what they know and love.
Night Two
Though this weekend's performance with Langhorne Slim was a two-night special, Trampled by Turtles has many tour dates throughout the remainder of winter and into spring. If able, definitely go check out Trampled by Turtles in person. You won't regret it!
